Garden of Life Primal Defense

Garden of Life Primal Defense

Dietary Needs:
None

Garden of Life is a top notch company in the health food store, where quality and efficacy are of upmost importance.  Primal Defense contains a unique whole food blend with Homeostatic Soil Organisms (HSOs). The HSOs in Primal Defense are important probiotics you would get in abundance if your food came from soil untouched by pesticides, herbicides and other widely used chemicals. To replenish the valuable probiotics our pasteurized, irradiated and disinfected food no longer provides, Primal Defense includes 12 species of hardy beneficial microorganisms in the form of the HSO Probiotic Blend.  The only ingredient we are not thrilled with (in any supplement) is magnesium stearate, which is in over 95% of supplements on the market. It is a harmful ingredient used to lubricate the machinery that makes the pills, resulting in a combination of hydrogenated oils. Nonetheless probiotics are an important part of digestive and immune wellness.

Kinnikinnick Waffles

Kinnikinnick Waffles

Dietary Needs:
Vegan, Dairy Free, Low Glycemic, Gluten Free

These waffles are a tasty gluten-free option made with rice flour, tapioca and pea starch. While the flour is good, this product does contain sugar. Keep in mind that gluten-free does not always mean super healthy. We would love to see them switch to stevia, xylitol or another natural sweetener to bump up their star rating, as would organic ingredients.

Born Free Bottles

Born Free Bottles

Dietary Needs:
None

The most important thing about this product is that it is free of Bisphenol-A (BPA) which is used to make toxic polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resins. Bisphenol-A has been known to be estrogenic since the mind-1930's. A 2010 US FDA report raised further concerns regarding exposure of BPA to fetuses, infants and young children. In Sep 2010, Canada became the first country to declare BPA as a toxic subtance. In the European union as well as Canida, BPA is banned in baby bottles. Born Free bottles also do not contain pathalates. They have a soft silicone nipple and inner valve which helps air vent to help eliminate colic symptoms by reducing vacuum build up.  5 stars all the way!

In a 12-hour window they harvest and process their acai fruit and completely control the process from tree to bottle to ensure premium quality. Açaí is a little berry with a deep purple color.  It is similar in shape to blueberries and has a large inner seed. Açaí is a nutrient-rich powerful anitoxidant that has the ability to fight to free radicals, disease and aging. Overall this company holds solid values in sustainiblity and is 100% USDA organic which are two of our rating categories. Oh how we wish their smoothies used a natural sweetener instead of evaprated cane juice (as the second ingredient). We hate to do it, but had to drop them a full star for that. They contain soy lecithin as well.  3.5 stars.
